An instructor may choose to protect their assessments by locking them down using Respondus LockDown Browser by itself, or with the addition of Respondus Monitor. LockDown Browser and Monitor are compatible with Windows and Macintosh (Mac) desktop and laptop computers.  In order to use these tools properly and efficiently, please read the following information.

Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser provides a secure testing environment for online tests and quizzes taken in Blackboard. It is an application, similar to that of Firefox or Chrome, that must be installed to your personal computer. If an instructor requires you to use Respondus LockDown Browser to take an assessment, you must download it from here (see below).

Download and Install Respondus LockDown Browser

Make sure your operating system (i.e. Windows or Mac) is up-to-date by installing all necessary system updates. Then, download and install the new version of LockDown Browser:

Updating Respondus LockDown Browser

After you have installed LockDown Browser, make sure you keep it up-to-date! If you have not updated Respondus LockDown Browser in the past month, you will need to do so by following these steps:

1. Open Respondus LockDown Browser
2. Click on the blue (i) icon in the top left hand corner of the screen.
3. Click "Check for Newer Version"
4. If a newer version is available, download it.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor is a companion product for LockDown Browser that enables RUC to protect the integrity of non-proctored, online exams. You will use your own computer and a webcam to record test sessions, all without leaving Blackboard.

Respondus Monitor requires you to use both LockDown Browser and a webcam. The webcam can be built into your computer or can be the type that plugs in with a USB cable.  A microphone is also required, which often comes built into laptops and external webcams.  If you do not have a built-in microphone, you will need to purchase one.

Watch this short video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser and the webcam feature.

If you are having difficulty using Respondus Monitor on your computer, you may instead go to the Educational Testing Center at RUC to take your exams. For additional information or to schedule an exam, contact the Educational Testing Center.

Using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor for Online Exams

To take an online test:

  • Start LockDown Browser.
  • Click on “To Be Determined” to begin, and then log in using your Blackboard username and password.
  • Navigate to the exam and open it. At that point, choose whether or not you are taking the test using Respondus Monitor or with a proctor at a secure location.
  • If you elect to use Respondus Monitor, you will be taken through a series of steps to get started. Please move very carefully through each step.
  • Take your time and read all instructions before proceeding.

When taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:

  • Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted.
  • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc.
  • Clear your desk of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices — unless otherwise instructed.
  • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test.
  • Make sure your webcam is plugged in or enabled before starting LockDown Browser by clicking here.
  • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and have been submitted for grading.
  • Reminder: you will be recorded during the test to ensure you're using only permitted resources.
